Horton plans or “ Maha eliya tenna” called in Sinhalese. (මහ එළිය තැන්න) .Horton plane is montane grassland and cloud forest. this is the largest park (plane in the central hills ). I can advise you to visit this eye-catching place visit in the morning time because you can feel the wonder of mist. According to my experience, you need to stay at least half a day to work around this wonderful place.
When we entering the Horton plain there is a small museum about the Horton plan small shop as well you can buy warm clothes and memorial items.
Buy this from the small shop near the museum it will help for your trails. (Rs 100)
Road to Horton planes
You can easily approach to Horton plain by train. And on the way to you can visit Sri Lanka’s highest sea-level railway station which is Pattipola railway station.
Horton plans situated in Central province and the nearest towns are Nuwaraeliya and Ohiya.
You can reach to here by two entries Pattipola and Ohiya.

History
The stone tools which is found in there is dating to balangoda culture. This original name is mahaeliya tenna but in British ruling time it named by british governor on that time Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton
There is a logical fork tale tells Great king Ravana land his aircraft thotupala mountain in Horton plans.
Horton Plains was designated a Wildlife Sanctuary on December 5, 1969. It was upgraded to a National Park on March 18, 1988.

Important
Bring hiking shoes, Adequate drink water, Cloths for cold weather you will take around 4 to 5 hours to climb around Horton plan. (depend on your fitness level) bring morning food with you if you start the trek early.

Climate (temperature & Rain fall)
Horton plans have got frequently cold weather its annual rainfall 2000 mm annual temperature is 13 c and night time it falls down for 5 c. Every time strong gale force winds.
Endemic plants, Birds, Animals
The Horton Plains feed the three main rivers in Sri Lanka, the Mahaweli, the Kelani, and the Walawe.
The vegetation of the plains is grassland adjacent to the Montenegro forest and includes many endemic woody plants. Large herds of Sambar deer in Sri Lanka are common mammals and the park is also an important bird sanctuary, with many species endemic to Sri Lanka and the Horton Plains.
Biodiversity- plants
750 species of plants belonging to 20 families have been recorded from the park. The canopy of this forest is going to a height of 20 m. Nearly 54 species of woody plants have been recorded in the park. 27 species endemic to Sri Lanka .
Biodiversity-Animals
The region’s vertebrates include 24 species of mammals, 87 species of birds, 9 species of reptiles, and eight species of amphibians.
The Horton Plains contain 21 endemic bird species. Four, Sri Lankan Blue Magpie, Dark-Blue Flying Catcher, Sri Lankan White Eye, and Sri Lankan Wood Pigeon found only in the Horton Plains, among other endemic species are the Sri Lankan Spurfowl, Sri Lankan Wild Birds, Yellow Front Barbet, Orange-Build. Bubbler, Sri Lanka Bush Warbler and Sri Lanka Whistle-terrace. Many birds migrate here during the winter, including the Swiftlet and the Alpine Swift.
